As of the census of 2000, there were 37,516 people, 14,407 households, and 8,817 families residing in the city. The population density was 982.7/km² (2,544.9/mi²). There were 17,170 housing units at an average density of 449.8/km² (1,164.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 49.54% White, 40.85% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 5.36% from other races, and 3.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.00% of the population. There were 14,407 households out of which 28.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.1% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 31.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. Home-schooler is repeat Spelling Bee winner
01/20/2012

At the end, winning word was ‘precipice’

It took 25 rounds, two hours and the spelling of “precipice” before Grace Remmer was declared winner of the 2012 St. Johns County Spelling Bee on Wednesday.

The word “scampi” took out her last opponent, Alex Luckau of Landrum Middle School, during the bee held in the school district auditorium at 40 Orange St.

This was the third straight year Grace, a home-schooled student, won the local spelling bee.

Remembering Wendy Helm

Wendy C. Helm, 47, passed away Jan. 2 at the Bailey Center for Caring. She lived in St. Augustine for 19 years and was a self-proclaimed “foodie.”

Wendy enrolled August 2010 in First Coast Technical College’s School of Culinary Arts to pursue her passion for cooking. Her goal was to complete her culinary training and walk at graduation on Jan. 24.

Wendy was an enthusiastic participant in FCTC’s weekly food features and contributed six recipes to share with the community.

State pension chief wants to double down on investment strategy
01/20/2012

TALLAHASSEE -- The official managing Florida’s $120 billion pension fund wants lawmakers to double the amount of money his agency can set aside for special investments that critics say are harder to value and carry more risk than traditional stocks and securities.


Ash Williams, reaffirmed Wednesday as the State Board of Administration’s executive director and chief investment officer for another year, said increasing the spending cap on “alternative investments” from 10 percent to 20 percent will diversify the state’s portfolio and reduce risk in a dreary market.

Film festival opens today, giving St. Augustinians a 'vacation from ordinary films'

The St. Augustine Film Festival begins Thursday, Jan. 19, offering local residents an opportunity to see a wide variety of independently produced films, the kind not normally available outside a major city.

The event, now in its second year, was previously called the Flagler College Film Festival. Organizer Gregory von Hausch, who lives in St. Augustine Beach, said the reason for the name change was clarity.

Sheriff's Office releases composite of suspect in attack on jogger
01/20/2012

Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit have released a composite sketch of the man wanted in connection with an attack on a female jogger early Sunday evening.

The attack happened just before dusk Sunday as a woman was jogging near Old Moultrie Road just north of Lewis Point Road. A man approached and attacked her from behind, taking her to the ground, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. The victim struggled with the man until she was able to break free and get help.

The clatter of typewriters echoed in a small classroom at Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind on Thursday morning as eight students “took” dictation from a 21st century digital audio device designed for the blind and vision impaired.

“Give yourself a hand,” teacher Sandy Serventi told the group after she called time. “Go, varsity.”

Stolen car recovered from pond near Sheriff's Office
01/20/2012

A stolen car was hidden for an unknown amount of time, possibly more than a month, in a retention pond near the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

A crowd gathered around the pond near the jail Thursday afternoon as a wrecker pulled the stolen red Dodge pickup truck out of the water.

Officials said the Sheriff’s Office found out the truck was in the pond after an anonymous caller told them a car antenna was sticking out of the water.

Senate panel votes to regulate, not ban, internet cafes

Thrasher is lone dissenting vote, worried about gambling

TALLAHASSEE — Coming on the heels of Gov. Rick Scott saying he’d like to see so-called “Internet cafes” outlawed, a Senate committee passed a bill 8-1 Thursday that would regulate, but not ban, the gaming centers.

State Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, was the only vote against the regulation bill. He called it a “major expansion of gambling.”

Flagler to honor Randolph prior to tonight's game

Flagler College will conduct a ceremony to honor former men’s basketball star John Randolph tonight. The event will take place prior tonight’s game against Clayton State, which is set to tip at 7:30 p.m. Randolph is the all-time scoring leader at Flagler and led the Saints to a pair of trips to the NAIA national championships. Randolph was a star at St. Augustine High School before going to Flagler. He was recently honored by SAHS for his accomplishments there.



Ponte Vedra ends Bartram's season in district semis

For the second year in a row — and only the second time in school history — the Bartram Trail girls soccer team finds itself shut out of the state playoffs.

The culprit, again, was Ponte Vedra.

The Sharks (17-4-3) notched a 1-0 victory against the Bears (14-3) at home on Wednesday night to book a spot in the state playoffs and advance to Friday’s District 4-3A championship against Creekside.

Mother hopes billboards will help find son's killer

Bryan Wrigley died in a hit-and-run accident around nine months ago, and his mother Mandy Wrigley is doing everything she can to help find the person who hit him.

Bryan Wrigley, a 23-year-old student at the University of St. Augustine, died after a vehicle struck him while he was riding his bike on County Road 214 near Molasses Junction.

Investigators believe the vehicle that struck him is a 2001 to 2003 dark metallic blue Ford Ranger extended cab pickup truck and that the driver was a white man in his 20s.

Gallagher and Suzy Bogguss coming to Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

Two events have been added to the 2012 lineup for the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall: country singer Suzy Bogguss on March 30 and comedian Gallagher on April 5.

Gallagher is a comedian, clown and entertainer from Tampa. His signature sketch is the “Sledge-O-Matic,” a large wooden mallet that Gallagher uses to smash a variety of objects including apples, pineapples, computer keyboards and, most famously watermelons.

Pedestrian hit on State Road 207
01/20/2012

A man was injured Wednesday evening after he was hit by a car on State Road 207 near State Road 312.

The man was trying to cross S.R. 207 near the Kangaroo gas station around 6:45 p.m. When he stepped into the road, a driver  hit him, said Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Phillip Payne, who was on scene.

“He just walked out into the road,” Payne said.

The victim’s name is William Gregory Wilson, 53, of St. Augustine, Payne said.

His shoe, food and other belongings that he was carrying were strewn across the pavement.

City receives grants to study downtown transportation alternatives
01/20/2012

Congressman John Mica announced Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the City of St. Augustine a $150,000 grant to study transportation solutions for the additional visitors expected during the 450th Commemoration.

The grant is in addition to the $753,000 award that the city received last week through the same program, the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit in Parks Program.

The planning study will address parking needs downtown as well as a temporary shuttle or circulator system.

Right now, we have minimal knee high surf with an occasional almost thigh high set. Overall, looks super weak and only rideable on a longboard. [...]
